In memory of Terry Bates
Terry Bates died recently.
He was heavily involved in the Lopdell Precinct redevelopment and was shoulder tapped by Ross Clow to do the job of managing the trust formed to spearhead the construction and renovation project.
It was a hell of a job that he was given.
He was tasked with ensuring that a 90 year old building with heritage status was not only made earthquake proof but also retained its heritage features.
And to build a brand new gallery immediately adjacent that respected not only the heritage features of the original building but also the Waitakere Ranges Heritage Area Act.
He had to negotiate between a group of passionate artistic groups about the use of the facility, a process which required some of them to give up perceived rights.
He had to oversee a $20 million budget that was not fully funded when construction started.
And he was expected to do this all for free!
Terry achieved all of this and more. The buildings were constructed under budget and on time and debt free.
He brought huge talents and a huge passion for the arts for the job. I am not sure I can think of anyone else who succeeded in the way that he did.
I also cannot begin to count the number of hours that he spent on the project.
I don't think his contribution has ever been acknowledged properly. The local board took the opportunity in 2020 to acknowledge him but he deserved much more.
I think that his contribution needs to be reflected properly and more permanently. Perhaps the Lopdell House Seminar Room should be renamed the Terry Bates Seminar Room so that we can always reflect on his contribution.
Moe mai rā Terry, moe mai rā.
